Jacketed tank
Jacketed tanks
A jacket is a cavity external to the vessel that permits the uniform exchange of heat between the fluid circulating in the tank and the walls of the vessel. In chemical engineering, a jacketed tank is a container that is designed for controlling temperature of its contents, by using a cooling or heating “jacket” around the vessel through which a cooling or heating fluid is circulated.
Jacketed tanks is the most extensive application of Pillowplates up-to-date. The flexibility of Pillowplates and their full surface area coverage, low fluid hold-up, favourable manufacturing costs and time, and easy cleaning ensures that the Jacketed tank can be optimally used. The tanks can be equipped with multiple jackets (double jacket tank) over its surface, including the tank bottom (conical or dished), and can include additional cylindrical shells inside the tank.
The food and beverage industry as the chemical and pharmaceutical industry are typical areas of implementation of Pillowplate jacketed tanks. These jackets are also referred to as dimple jackets. These so-called dimples impart turbulence to the heating jacket for tanks or the tank cooling jacket.
A few examples of jacketed tanks are:
- Jacketed mixing tank
- Jacketed process tank
- Jacketed unitank
- Jacketed brite tank

Single-embossed laser-welded jacketed vessels are made of two stainless steel Pillowplates of different thickness, welded together by using laser or resistance welding. Through a special inflation process, fluid channels are created between the Pillowplates. Together with the fittings, these channels form a pressure chamber, through which a fluid will pass to transfer heat transfer to and from the chamber, enclosing the single-embossed laser-welded dimple jacket. A well-designed jacketed tank with a thermal fluid system is a seamless way to achieve the temperatures that are needed to heat or cool the product within.
Jacketed vessels are used in many industries and are mainly used as process tank plates. For example in heating and cooling food- and pharmaceutical tanks. The use of single-embossed Pillowplates, already deformed, combine the advantage of compressive strength and required smooth interior of the inner tank wall.
The large dimple jacketed surface ensures safe process control with homogeneous temperature control. Manufactured tanks out of laser-welded dimple jackets have also less weight, above all, because of less stainless steel material. Tanks can be manufactured cost efficient by even higher product quality.
Single embossed laser-welded dimple jackets are integrated into process tank cooling and heating steps. Individual design in measurement, shape and material, allow flexible use in numerous industries and extend the normal standard. Single embossed laser-welded dimple jackets may be rolled to a cylindrical half-jacket and be clamped on to existing tanks retroactively. Or being welded to rings to build a tank.
